4th Grade Mrs. Callahan

We begin many of our days with journal writing and learning spelling, grammar, and various forms of writing.  Cursive is a new skill to most 4th graders this year!  Math hour is taught in small groups and previous skills are practiced daily in our math journals.  We are learning numbers to a greater place value, and exploring the relationship between multiplication and division.  In the afternoon reading hour is spent introducing students to different genres and practicing various reading strategies to guide comprehension.  A big focus this year is learning the different features of informational text and utilizing these features to guide understanding.  Finally, the day ends alternating units of science or social studies.  Learning the history, geography, and government of Ohio is the focus during the 4th grade year.  Students learn with the combination of whole group direct instruction, small group instruction, based on readiness, A+ educational software, and one-on-one activities.  I enjoy seeing the growth of my students and teaching them things they never new before.  It is very rewarding when students begin applying the skills you have taught them!
